Commercial & Industrial Rolling Shutters

Rolling Shutter Motors

Side-mounted electromechanical drives that lift rolling shutters by turning the shutter shaft through a chain-and-sprocket reduction. Every RV-series model ships with a manual hand-chain for power failures, an electromagnetic brake that holds the curtain in position, and adjustable limit switches.

What is a rolling shutter motor?

A rolling shutter motor is an electromechanical drive unit mounted beside the shutter roller. It turns the shutter shaft through a geared reduction and sprocket-and-chain transmission to raise and lower the curtain. It is rated by the maximum curtain weight it can lift (kg), output torque (N·m) and supply phase.

Selection

How to choose a rolling shutter motor

  1. Weigh the curtain, not the opening. Capacity ratings refer to the total weight of the shutter curtain plus bottom rail. Add 15–20% safety margin for older or heavier-gauge slats.
  2. Check the supply available at the site. Single-phase 220 V motors cover most shops and residential garages; three-phase 380 V motors are used for wide industrial bays and curtains above 1000 kg.
  3. Confirm lifting height. Each model lists a maximum lifting height; taller openings need larger shaft diameters and may require a higher-capacity motor.
  4. Consider duty cycle. Retail shutters that open twice a day are a light duty; logistics doors that cycle dozens of times a shift need a higher rating so the motor stays within its thermal limits.
  5. Specify safety accessories: photocells for pedestrian openings, a warning lamp for vehicle entrances, and a lock box if the shutter must be secured from outside.

Installation

Installation notes

  • The motor mounts on the shutter bracket plate on either side of the roller; left- or right-hand mounting is set at installation.
  • The drive sprocket connects to the shaft sprocket with a roller chain; alignment must be checked so the chain runs straight under load.
  • Upper and lower travel limits are set on the limit-switch dials after the curtain has been fitted to the roller.
  • The manual chain must hang clear of the curtain and be reachable from floor level with the power isolated.
  • A dedicated supply with an isolator and correctly rated MCB is required; three-phase units need phase-sequence verification before first run.

Installation is carried out by authorised Rollvento dealers and installers. Wiring diagrams and sizing support are available from technical support.

FAQ

Rolling Shutter Motors: common questions

What is a rolling shutter motor?

A rolling shutter motor is a side-mounted electromechanical drive that turns the shutter shaft through a gearbox and chain to raise and lower the curtain. It replaces manual pull-chains or spring balancing and is rated by curtain weight (kg), output torque (N·m) and supply phase.

How do I know which capacity I need?

Weigh or calculate the curtain weight (slat weight per square metre × curtain area, plus the bottom rail). Choose the next capacity above that figure with at least a 15–20% margin. Rollvento single-phase models cover 400–1000 kg and three-phase models cover 1500–2000 kg.

Single phase or three phase — which should I use?

Use single-phase 220 V motors where only a domestic supply is available and the curtain is under about 1000 kg. Use three-phase 380 V motors for heavy industrial curtains, wide bays, or high daily cycle counts where a three-phase supply exists.

What happens during a power failure?

Every Rollvento rolling shutter motor includes a manual hand-chain. With the power isolated, the chain drives the gearbox directly so the shutter can be opened or closed by hand. The electromagnetic brake prevents the curtain from free-falling.

Can I add remote control and safety sensors?

Yes. Motors are supplied with a receiver/control board and remotes. Infrared photocells, warning lamps, push-button stations, GSM and Wi-Fi modules are available as accessories and connect to the control board.
