Boom Barrier Selection Guide
Choose a boom barrier for parking, toll or campus entrances: opening speed, boom length, cycle rating, servo vs brushless DC, loop detectors and RFID integration.

A boom barrier is a simple device with a hard job: open fast, close only when safe, and do it hundreds of times a day for years. Selecting one comes down to five questions.
1. How much traffic, and how fast?
Count peak vehicles per hour for the lane. Every second of opening time is a second of queue.
- Toll plazas, high-volume commercial and truck gates: a servo barrier with sub-second opening and a 10-million-cycle mechanism — the CSEDZ103S.
- Multi-storey car parks, offices, campuses: DC brushless — the CSDZS10 opens in 0.9 s and is rated for 5 million cycles.
- Residential complexes and low-traffic entrances: the no-spring CSEDZ40 removes spring fatigue and maintenance.
2. Boom length and type
Measure the lane kerb to kerb. Booms are supplied in 3–6 m lengths (3–4.5 m for the CSEDZ40). Choose a straight boom unless headroom is limited — basement ramps and covered entrances may need a folding (articulated) boom. For very wide entrances, two barriers with a central island are safer than one long boom.
3. Motor and mechanism
| Criterion | Servo (CSEDZ103S) | Brushless DC (CSDZS10) | Brushless DC no-spring (CSEDZ40) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening time | 0.9 s | 0.9 s | — (see datasheet) |
| Rated cycles (MTBF) | 10,000,000 | 5,000,000 | 5,000,000 |
| Mechanism | Cast aluminium | Cast aluminium | Cast aluminium, no balance spring |
| Supply | DC 24 V | DC 24 V | DC 24 V |
| Boom | 3–6 m straight | 3–6 m straight | 3–4.5 m straight |
All three include auto-rebound obstacle protection and soft start/stop.
4. Safety devices
A barrier is a vehicle control device, not a pedestrian one. Every lane should have:
- a vehicle loop detector on the safety side (and optionally the approach side for auto-open),
- or a photocell pair across the lane as an alternative or addition,
- a warning lamp or boom LED where visibility is poor,
- a separate pedestrian gate so people do not walk under the boom.
5. Integration
Rollvento barriers accept dry-contact commands, so any access device that closes a contact can raise the boom: push button, remote receiver, RFID reader, ANPR camera controller, ticket dispenser or parking-management relay. The GSM controller adds call-to-open for up to 1000 numbers without any wiring beyond power.
Confirm with your parking-system integrator which outputs they need (boom position feedback, vehicle-present signal) and check them against the barrier control board before ordering.
Site checklist for a quotation
- Lane width and number of lanes
- Peak vehicles per hour
- Headroom at the barrier position
- Integration: RFID / ANPR / ticketing / GSM / remotes
- Power and conduit routes to the foundation
- Photo of the entrance

Frequently asked questions
What boom length do I need?
The boom must span the lane with about 200–300 mm clearance to the far kerb. Standard Rollvento booms cover 3–6 m lanes (3–4.5 m for the no-spring CSEDZ40). Split a very wide entrance into two lanes rather than fitting an over-long boom.
Servo or DC brushless boom barrier?
Both Rollvento servo and brushless units open in 0.9 s. The servo CSEDZ103S is rated for 10 million cycles for toll and heavy commercial traffic; the brushless CSDZS10 and no-spring CSEDZ40 are rated for 5 million cycles and suit parking, campuses and residential complexes.
Do I need a loop detector?
Yes for any vehicle lane. A loop detector (or photocell pair) prevents the boom from closing while a vehicle is under it and can auto-close after the vehicle has passed. Auto-rebound protection is a backstop, not a substitute.
