Sliding Gate Motors
Rack-and-pinion gate operators for tracked and cantilever sliding gates. The SL series spans 24 V DC battery-backed openers for villas, high-speed brushless units for busy entrances, and heavy-duty AC drives for industrial gates up to 2000 kg.
What is a sliding gate motor?
A sliding gate motor is a floor-mounted operator that moves a gate horizontally by driving a pinion gear against a toothed rack fixed to the gate. It is rated by maximum gate weight (kg), gate speed (m/min) and supply type (24 V DC or 220/380 V AC).
How to choose a sliding gate motor
- Gate weight is the first filter: choose a motor whose rated capacity exceeds the gate weight by a comfortable margin. Cantilever gates put more load on the pinion than tracked gates.
- Choose DC for residential and low-to-medium traffic where battery backup and soft-start matter; choose AC or brushless for high cycle counts and long, heavy gates.
- Match gate length to opening speed. Rollvento DC motors run at 16–18 m/min, so a 10 m gate opens in about 35 seconds; the brushless SL500DCW at 22 m/min cuts that to about 27 seconds.
- Decide on limit type: electronic or magnetic limits are preferred where dust, water or vibration are present; mechanical spring limits are adequate for clean residential sites.
- Add a rack of the correct module (Module 4 for all Rollvento sliding motors), photocells across the opening and a warning lamp.
Installation notes
- A level concrete plinth is cast beside the gate track, and the motor is bolted to its base plate with anchor bolts.
- The rack is fixed to the gate leaf in sections, with 1–2 mm clearance above the pinion so the gate weight never rests on the motor.
- Travel limits (mechanical, magnetic or electronic depending on model) are set at the fully open and fully closed positions.
- Photocells are mounted on both sides of the opening at 500–600 mm height; the control board is then programmed for auto-close and obstacle sensitivity.
- A manual release key disengages the gearbox so the gate can be moved by hand during a power failure.
Installation is carried out by authorised Rollvento dealers and installers. Wiring diagrams and sizing support are available from technical support.
Sliding Gate Motors: common questions
What is a Rollvento sliding gate motor?
It is a floor-mounted rack-and-pinion operator that opens and closes sliding gates. Rollvento supplies 24 V DC models with battery backup for homes, high-speed brushless models for busy entrances and 220 V AC industrial models for gates up to 2000 kg.
Which Rollvento motor suits a heavy sliding gate?
For gates above roughly 1000 kg — typical of long steel industrial gates — choose the SL1500AC or SL2000AC 220 V AC models, which are rated to 1500 kg and 2000 kg respectively. For very long or high-cycle industrial gates, contact engineering for a sizing review.
DC or AC sliding gate motor — what is the difference?
24 V DC motors run on a low-voltage control board with battery backup, soft-start and precise obstacle detection, and suit residential and commercial gates. 220 V AC motors deliver higher continuous torque for heavier industrial gates but do not normally run on battery backup.
What is a gear rack and which one do I need?
The rack is the toothed bar fixed along the gate that the motor pinion drives. All Rollvento sliding motors use Module 4 racks; choose nylon-with-steel-core racks for residential gates and galvanised steel racks (8–22 mm) for heavier gates.
Can the gate be opened during a power cut?
Yes. DC models continue to operate on battery backup (where fitted). All models have a key-operated manual release that disengages the gearbox so the gate can be slid by hand.
