Rolling Shutter Automation
Retail shopfronts, showrooms, warehouses and basement car parks rely on steel rolling shutters. A side-mounted motor lifts the curtain by chain drive, holds it with an electromagnetic brake and can be operated by hand during power cuts.
What the automation has to do
- Lift the full curtain weight without overheating during normal daily use.
- Hold the curtain at any position — never free-fall.
- Provide manual operation with power isolated.
- Stop precisely at the top and bottom limits.
What to measure on site
- Curtain weight (kg): slat weight per m² × curtain area, plus bottom rail
- Opening width and height (m); maximum lifting height per model
- Supply available: single-phase 220 V or three-phase 380 V
- Roller shaft diameter and bracket plate size
- Daily cycles and whether pedestrians pass under the shutter

Rolling Shutter Automation: common questions
How do I size a rolling shutter motor?
Calculate the curtain weight, add 15–20% margin and choose the next capacity up. Rollvento RV-400/600/800/1000 cover single-phase sites; RV-1500 and RV-2000 cover heavy three-phase installations. Check the maximum lifting height as well as weight.
Can an existing manual shutter be motorised?
Usually yes, if the bracket plates and roller shaft are in good condition and there is room for the motor beside the roller. An installer will confirm the shaft diameter and bracket fit.
