Swing Gate vs Sliding Gate Automation

A practical comparison of swing and sliding gate automation — space, slope, security, cost, speed and maintenance — and how each is motorised.

· 6 min read · Rollvento Engineering

The choice between a swing gate and a sliding gate is usually made by the site, not by preference. Once that choice is clear, the automation follows.

Decide by the site first

Site conditionSwing gateSliding gate
Driveway slopes up inside the gate✘ leaves foul the ground✔
No space beside the opening for run-off✔✘ needs opening width + ~0.5 m
Limited space inside for leaves to swing✘✔
Very wide opening (over ~6 m)✘ leaves become heavy and long✔
Level ground, ornamental gate✔✔
Wind-exposed, solid-sheet gate✘ high load on hinges and operators✔

How each is automated

Swing gates get one operator per leaf. A linear actuator (Rollvento SW series, 200–400 kg per leaf) mounts between the pillar and the leaf and pushes it open. Where the hinge is set back on a wide pillar, an articulated arm or heavy PK-series operator (up to 600 kg per leaf) is used. A control board runs both leaves, sets the closing order and drives an optional electric lock.

Sliding gates get a single floor-mounted motor that drives a pinion against a Module 4 rack fixed along the leaf. The motor carries the whole gate weight rating — Rollvento SL series covers 500 kg 24 V DC units to 2000 kg 220 V AC drives.

When swing wins

  • Level driveways where the leaves can swing inward.
  • Heritage or ornamental entrances where the gate design matters.
  • Narrow plots with no space beside the opening.

When sliding wins

  • Sloping drives.
  • Wide industrial and commercial openings.
  • Sites with high wind exposure or solid-sheet gates.
  • Anywhere security is the priority.

What to send for a quotation

For either type: opening width, gate weight (or construction and dimensions), power available at the gate, daily cycles, and a photo of the pillars. Engineering will confirm the operator, the rack or bracket geometry, and the safety accessories. Request a quote or read the sliding gate motor buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more secure, a swing gate or a sliding gate?

A sliding gate is harder to force because the rack-and-pinion drive holds it along its full length and it cannot be pushed open. Swing gates are secure when fitted with an electric lock at the meeting stile; without one, long leaves can be levered.

Can a swing gate be automated on a sloping driveway?

Only if the leaves swing away from the slope with enough ground clearance. If the ground rises in the direction of opening, the leaf will foul — a sliding gate is usually the answer on sloped sites.

Which is cheaper to automate?

A single sliding gate motor plus rack is usually comparable in cost to a pair of swing gate actuators. The gate itself, groundwork for a track or plinth, and pillar work often matter more than the motor price.
